Layering Block Elements?

Hi, i'm trying to figure out if there is any way to layer block elements with PHP.

Right now i'm using a background image for #central, and ican then use the editor to drop in an image in front.

but since i am using the Header function, it pushes the body down, and i would like to be able to layer the left side bar over both images rather than under.

can anyone help me out?

I ended up using CSS to move the sidebar element with absolute positioning, and a higher z-index. while aesthetically this is ok, the C5 editor does not allow me to edit the sidebar element any longer. is there an aleternative layering method, or an additional style in need to change somewhere else?
