Old site password keeps changing back to what it was before I changed it!

We've got an old 5.4.2.1 site where the password keeps changing back to what it was before I changed it!

So imagine it used to be set to "originalpassword" for example and I do the usual "forgot my password" to change it to "pass123".

The password changes fine and I can login. Now imagine the next day I try and login and the password has reverted to "originalpassword"

Any ideas how to fix this please?

I would start looking at back end cache programs running on the server.
Also clear your browser cache or try a different browser.

It could be something else. I remember once I worked on a website that had a piece of code to make sure the admin password was always the same. According to the client that was something put in place by another dev to make sure they always could go in.
