blank page after changing design

I set up a new site. The startpage ist ok. I added subpages. When I add another Layout to a subpage, the page is empty. Not even HTML, just nothing.

The Information, that changing te design might cause strange behavior makes not a trustfull impression.

So what could it be?

This sounds like a PHP error on the page, if you check your server error logs do you find anything?

where can I see the php eror log?
the thing is, that this error occurs on my local installation and on the webserver.
